Sydney Wolf Blog 5

Although I believe that Israel should be a Jewish state based on Jewish traditions and culture, I feel that some changes need to be made when it comes to religion and the state. There should be other options for Jews outside of the Orthodox Rabbinate Court when it comes to marriage, divorce, and burial. As a reform Jew, I would not want to be married under Orthodox law. I do not practice as an orthodox Jew nor do I believe in some of the practices of orthodox Judaism so why, as a reform Jew, should I have to get married under a sect of my religion that I am not a part of?
Also, I do not think it is fair to the Jewish women of Israel that if they are unhappy in their marriage or being treated poorly in their marriage, that they are not allowed to get a divorce without the consent of their husbands. The Orthodox Rabbinate court is not lenient when it comes to divorces and it could take years and years for a woman to be granted one. Why should a woman have to suffer, just because the man is selfish and will not grant her a divorce? Why should a woman have to pay off her husband who beats her just so that he will grant her a divorce? The Orthodox way of getting a divorce is unfair to women of all sects of religion and treats them as though their well being is less important than their husbands. It is even more unfair that a Jewish woman who is not orthodox and does not believe in orthodoxy should have to suffer for years because the Orthodox Rabbinate is in charge of Jewish divorce.
Israel needs to work on accommodating different religions and different sects of religions on the basis of marriage, divorce, and burial.
