Israel needs its checkpoints. It
cannot defend itself or protect its civilians without them. It is Israel’s
right to be able to defend itself and its borders. It takes courage and bravery
for Israeli soldiers to stand on these borders and monitor who crosses through
as they are putting themselves in life or death situations with every person
that approaches. They have to decide whether someone is a threat to the nation
or not within seconds because if they do not catch a dangerous person
approaching in time, their lives and the lives of everyone around them could be
cut short.
These young
men and women have the right to be skeptical of everyone and anyone that walks
through and have the right to question who is crossing their borders. Their
lives, and the lives of those around them are at stake every second they are
standing there. It is their job and their duty to protect the country even if
that means being tough. Not allowing an Arab women to cross through into Israel
because she does not have her identification card does not make Israeli
soldiers racist, it makes them responsible. They are doing their job and
enforcing that one must have proper identification when coming into Israel,
which is no different then when someone is trying to come into the United
States. Citizen or not, one must show a passport at US customs in order to
enter the country. However, we don’t call that racism, we call it national
security. So, why should Israel be criticized for doing the same thing?
